Visit Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village In Warrnambool, Victoria

What Is Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village?

The Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is one of the best museums in Warrnambool that highlights the impact of the Victoria coastline. Today, the museum is above stunning Victoria beaches and is one of many thriving southeastern tourist attractions. Walk down the historical artifacts and journals recounting the past, filled with sailors attempting to create a future for their families while acknowledging the high risks. Every sunrise asks the question, will the ships return, or would another crew fall to the southern galls? To this day, several Victoria shipwrecks are still unfound.

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is above the shipwreck coastline, giving distance to the tragic events of the past, and creating a platform to celebrate a bright future. Today, it's a fun and family-focused activity that brings history to life through a daily light show and tactile replicas of the village. After the museum, walk along Discovery Coast and connect to the history of sacrifice, honor, and success.

What To Do At Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village?

Arriving at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is just the beginning of an educational day spent exploring the nautical history of Victoria. From the Warrnambool Garrison to the nightly light show - there is something for everyone.

The Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum

With modern technology that brings history to life, begin the day by exploring the museum and seeing several different artifacts from shipwrecks. The museum goes into a deeper explanation of what each part contributed to the body of ships and also offers visual demonstrations of hulls and sails. The museum will provide a map of the grounds as you move on to the next installation.

The Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village

Exiting the museum transports you back into the 1800s at the village gate. Spread across over 10 hectares and featuring over 40 buildings that reflect everything from traditional confectionary to dressmakers. The path winding through the village is wide enough to accommodate accessibility aids providing an inclusive space for all to wander. Enter bank buildings, candle makers, schoolhouses, and a church to see how a community banded together amidst tragedy.

The Warrnambool Garrison

On the second Saturday of each month from October and May, witness volunteers demonstrating re-enactments of military activities surrounding the prestigious cannon. If your family wants to hear the cannon fire, live drills happen at 1 pm.

Shipwreck monuments and treasures

The Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum is entrusted with Australia’s most significant shipwreck artifact collection. Families and friends alike will be thrilled to view the Loch Ard Peacock, a treasure dating back to 1878. Currently valued at four million, the Loch Ard Peacock washed ashore two days after the ship transporting it to Melbourne crashed into what we call today the Loch Ard Gorge cliffs.

Lighthouses

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village also boasts two functioning lighthouses within the grounds. Explore the structures that the community heavily relied on by starting with the house of the lighthouse master before venturing upwards for a breathtaking view of the bay.

The Sound and Light Show

Finish the day with tickets to the nightly sound and light show but dress accordingly for the weather. Audience members walk to the stage with a signature lantern. As you arrive, the stage is revealed to be the village wharf and will commence rain or shine. Guests are treated to visual and audio excellence while the history of the Flagstaff Hill Maritime community plays out across the water before their eyes.
